Setting work using published courses

Setting work using published courses

Important facts about setting work

When setting work for your students, you can choose from a total of 5 courses (in total, giving you around 10,000 words and sentences), or you can choose your own lists:

  • Nat.Curriculum 2014 England: spellings  Follows the English Government’s spellings for KS1 and KS2.
  • 'Alpha to Omega' Follows the progression found in the book ‘Alpha to Omega’ by Bevé Hornsby and Frula Shear.
  • Everyday vocabulary  Set 1 covers very basic words. Set 2 adds more lists plus simple sentences in the Simple Crossword game. Set 3 includes many more lists, with simple and complex sentences in two Crossword games.
  • High Frequency Words (HFW) Words that are needed most frequently for reading and for writing.
  • ‘Wordshark’ course (the same course used for Supershark)
  • Your own word lists! This can be useful for vocabulary, for tailoring lists to a student’s errors, the weekly class list, an interest list etc. An option is to use your own voice and pictures.

Students will need to click on ‘My set work’ in their main menu if they have been set work.

Each list needs a 75% accuracy on any one of the ‘spell check’ games before moving on.

To set work, click on ‘Set new work’ in your dashboard. There is more information on setting work

When you set work this can be from any published course, from your own lists or from shared lists.
Idea
Setting work is a simple but targeted approach to ensure students focus on your chosen wordlists.
Students need to complete each list in the set work to a level of 75% correct in one of the 3 Spell Check games (with check in the name). Students are moved on through the lists you have set as soon as each is mastered. When all are achieved the work is shown as complete.

How to set work

Step 1:  Select 'Set New Work' from your Dashboard

A wizard will take you through a sequence: first select a group, then students, and click on Next Step.  Within a group you can select all - or just individual students.

Step 2:  Choose the Course containing the lists that you want to set as work.  Choose any course e.g. Alpha to Omega from the list of courses provided.

Alternatively set your own lists or those shared with you by other teachers.

Here as an example, a publisher course Alpha to Omega has been chosen.

Step 3:  Select either a whole unit or individual wordlists.  Example screens follow.

Step 4:  Check this summary of the work you have chosen – or use the 'Change' hyperlinks to edit your selection.

Step 5:   Set a time limit, name the work, and submit.

Below is the same example as above but now showing 1 out of 2 students having completed the work – ‘1 Done’. Clicking on this link will tell you which student(s) have done the work.

When the students sign in

When students login they should click on Set Work (top menu).  You will need to point this out to your students (young children especially) so they understand where the 'My Set Work'  tab is.

After each game they should click on the ‘play next’ button followed by the green ‘start’ or ‘play’ button. Encourage them to use a variety of games. They must play one of the 3 spell check (test) games - with 75% accuracy -in order to complete each list in their set work

2) They will then need to click on the 'start' button on the set work part of the screen

3) To find the 3 spell check games (under the spell tab) – any of which will allow them to finish their set work – they can choose from a variety of games – or go quickly when confident to try a spell check game  - a spelling game with the word check in its name (75% success rate required to move on)

4) You can also show them how to check their progress by looking at the progress bar (see below)

5) When their work is finished it will show Completed - the 'play' button will remain active to allow additional practice.
